Chapter 16
Ella’s POV:
I end up hiding in my room all day crying my eyes out. I skipped breakfast and lunch. I didn’t want to see anyone, not to mention I had no appet*ite. Looking myself in the mirror this morning, made the psychotic break-down I have been avoiding for 10 months tear my heart open. I sobbed and sobbed until there were no tears left in me. All I was left with was the constant pain that never seemed to end.
Around 3 p.m., I heard a knock on my door. I considered ignoring it, but my curiosity got the best of me as I rarely get my door knocked on. I open the door and find the deep blue eyes of beta Joseph staring at me. I grip the door tightly at the sight of him. Why is he here? My heart begins to beat rapidly, as I stare at him in fear. He takes a look at my face and sadness fills his features.
“Ella, I went to the pack hospital to check on you. They told me you never came. Are you okay?” he asks in concern.

It takes me a minute to answer him. Why would he go to check on me? Did alpha Klaus send him? Do they suspect anything?
“I’m fine” I answer, then I notice that I didn’t convince him, so I carry on “I went to take a shower first, because you know I was covered in mud, and when I got out of the shower, I wasn’t bleeding anymore. My small cuts were already healing. So, I didn’t see any reason to go to the hospital”
“Oh, I see. Well, I am glad you are healing so quickly. When I saw the blood on your shirt, it got me so worried about you” he said in a polite tone.
I don’t know why he was this nice to me. It was so suspicious.
“There is nothing to worry about beta, I am fine” I say cautiously.
He was on the verge of saying something else, but seemed to change his mind at the last second.
“Ok then, I will leave you to rest” he said as he turned around and left the corridor.
I close the door and go back to laying on my stomach. What the hell was that? Why would he care enough to check up on me? If I wanted to compare his behavior with beta Sam, they were completely different. Beta Sam would never think about checking on me or making sure I was ok. Everything beta Joseph did ever since I met him indicated that he cared about me for reasons beyond my understanding. But somehow, I still don’t trust him. Perhaps I don’t trust anyone in this whole world but myself.
After the beta left, I dozed off for hours. I was so exhausted from last night’s running, this morning’s punishment, and crying my eyes out till noon. I woke up to find it 11 at night. I missed dinner, which is usually served at 8. My stomach was complaining from the lack of food. I would have ignored it, but the pain in my back was becoming unbearable. I have to go to the kitchen to boil some herbs in water to keep the infection away and sooth my aches, I might as well eat something.
I go to the kitchen, not expecting to find anyone at this hour. I open the door and find alpha Klaus and beta Joseph sitting in front of the dining table. I curse myself in my head, why do they always have to be wherever I go? They both turn around and look at me.
“Oh I’m… I’m sorry I thought the kitchen was empty” I mumble in a low voice.
“It’s ok Ella, you can join us. I am sure you didn’t have dinner yet, right?” says Joseph in excitement. I saw the alpha look at him with raised eyebrows.
He must be kidding me. Right? There is no way he wants me to join them for dinner. Because that would be so freaking awkward.
“I…I can serve you if you want” I say in hesitation.
“No, I want you to sit with us. Please have a seat. I am cooking pasta, it doesn’t really need to be served” he says politely as he stands up and offers me his seat. What the hell is he doing? I think to myself. I look at the alpha, waiting for him to kick me out or something. He stares at me for a minute and then gestures to Joseph’s seat.
“You can sit down Ella, it’s ok” he says in a dry tone.
I should have stayed in my room. I think regrettably as I take the seat offered to me on the right side of alpha Klaus. Joseph puts the cooked pasta in a bowl, brings it over and puts it on the table next to a bowl of red sauce.
“Bon Appét*it” says Joseph as he sits on the opposite seat.
We all stare at each other waiting for the first person to reach for the pasta. It sure as hell wasn’t going to be me, I am nothing but a servant. I can’t serve myself first. None of them reach for it after half a minute.
Just like I thought, this dinner was going to be so freaking awkward. I get up and reach for the alpha’s empty plate, and begin to scoop up a serving of pasta onto his plate. I drench it in red sauce and put it back in front of him. I do the same for beta Joseph, and finally serve myself. We eat in silence for a few minutes.
I was praying that none of them talk to me the entire time, when beta Joseph asks me excitedly “Well? Am I an excellent chef or what? I want your honest opinion please”
Argh, so much for praying. I answer with a short simple response, hoping he would take a hint that I had no interest for a conversation with either of them “It is very delicious honestly”
He either doesn’t take the hint or doesn’t care “Well, I am glad you like it because it is about the only thing I can cook perfectly” he says proud of himself.
I nod with a small smile.
“Ella, there is someone I wanted to ask you about. I asked the other servants but none of them recognized the name, maybe you do” he says cautiously. My heart begins to beat faster, for some unknown reason. I say nothing and wait for him to continue.
“Do you know someone named Elliot Smith?” I notice alpha Klaus stare at my face sharply waiting for my response.
“No, I am sorry it doesn’t ring any bells for me. But I am probably not the right person to ask. I don’t socialize with anyone” I answer honestly and busy myself with my plate. Whoever that person was, he made alpha Klaus on edge and I thanked god that I didn’t recognize the name.
“I see, well I had to try my luck” Joseph says to himself.
Alpha Klaus kept staring at me. I could feel his eyes on me; while mine were glued to my plate, it made me very nervous. Does he think I am lying? I need to get out of here, this dinner was getting more awkward by the second.
“Would you like some wine with your pasta?” I ask them in a small voice.
“Actually, I looked around for some wine but couldn’t find any” Answered Joseph.
“We store the wine in the storage room next to the kitchen, I will get you a bottle” I say as I stand up and leave the kitchen in a hurry. I take my time to return to them. Anything to avoid alpha Klaus’s weird stares. I plan on pouring them wine then excusing myself to go to bed.
As I enter the kitchen, I find them in a deep heated conversation, that they don’t even notice I came back.
“Even if none of the servants recognized the name, I am telling you Joseph, he is from this pack” Alpha Klaus says in a low angry tone.
“I asked everyone from servants to Grey’s inner circle, none of them recognized it. If he was from this pack, he would be under another name” Joseph a*s*sured him.
“You need to look into all the pack’s data, specifically their photos. I will recognize him when I see him. His face is one I would never forget. That bastard must pay for K*lling my father and mate before he tries to make a run for it!” Alpha Klaus bangs his fist on the table in rage.
My heart stops beating completely. No way. This is not happening to me. He was talking about my father. Alpha Gray sent my father to K*ll alpha Klaus’s father and mate. I never got the name of the pack or the alpha from alpha Grey before he passed out the night he told me all about it, but I was sure now that he is the one he was talking about.
My body became numb at the discovery I just made; I couldn’t control my hands when they released the bottle of wine, I forgot I was holding. Their conversation was cut short when they were startled by the crashing sound of the wine bottle smashing on the floor.
