Chapter 53
Ella’s POV:
I barely manage to get out of the door leading to the basem*nt, before I supported my weight on the door, unable to move any more. I felt like I was struggling to breath.
Alpha Klaus’s hands touch my shoulders as he stands in front of me.
“Just breath, you’re ok, Ella. Just breath,” he says softly.

I look at him and whisper breathlessly “What the hell did he mean by that?”
He shook his head, “I don’t know. But whatever he said was only meant to make you panic. He’s playing with you, don’t let him.”
Something told me; probably his cold voice, that he really wasn’t playing at all. He was telling the truth.
The truth will make me wish I was dead. I take a deep breath and try to compose myself.
“Are you okay?” asks alpha Klaus in concern.
“Yeah. Let’s just get out of here and check on Sara,” I say in a strained voice.
As we begin walking towards Joseph and Sara’s place, a question comes to my mind.
“Where was Sara shot?” I ask alpha Klaus tensely.
“She was shot twice in the stomach,” he answered reluctantly.
I let out a soft gasp and stop walking. Twice!
“She is okay now, I promise. Joseph got her to the hospital on time. They transferred a few bags of pure blood into her during surgery. She is as good as new” he said rea*s*suringly.
“Wait, she is a half blood?” I ask in shock.
“Yeah she is like you, she doesn’t have a wolf. You didn’t know?”
“No, I didn’t actually. It’s hard to distinguish between pures and halves here. Back in my old pack you could instantly know who’s who just by looking at them.”
“Because our pack does not focus on that kind of thing. Your blood origin must not define you,” he said firmly.
I nod in agreement as we resume walking. Another conclusion pops into my head.
“Wait, so Joseph and Sara are not mates then, right?”
“No, they aren’t.”
“Wow, the love they have for each other is so enchanting I always a*s*sumed they were mates,” I said in wonder.
“I told you. Not having a mate does not mean that true love is impossible to find.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” I said as I thought about how deeply Joseph loves Sara, and they weren’t even mates.
“Joseph is a pure blood right?”
“No, he is also a half blood, but he has a very strong wolf, just like any pure blood.”
Another shock passed through me. A half-blood beta! That would have been next to impossible in our old pack. Even if he had a strong wolf.
And he had a strong wolf all right. I remembered how his wolf caught me while I was running away from the pack and pinned me down. His wolf was magnificent, he scared the hell out of me.
Alpha Klaus smiled at my continuous shocked state.
I wondered at something, “So hypothetically speaking, if Joseph has a wolf, then he must have a mate out there. What if he found her one day? What happens then?”
I looked at alpha Klaus and saw him smiling mysteriously. That was not the reaction I was expecting.
“What do you think would happen? You think he would leave Sara for his true mate? Or leave his true mate for Sara?” he asked cryptically.
I thought about it for a while, “I don’t know. It’s hard to decide because both options will result in the same thing. One of them will get hurt. And Joseph will be hurt either way,” I shuddered at that. It was an impossible situation.
“You’re right it’s very hard to decide, he did find his mate by the way, about sixteen years ago.”
“Oh my god he did? I was just speaking hypothetically,” I was horrified that it actually happened.
“Well, what happened to her, his mate I mean?” I asked curiously.
“He met her when he was visiting another pack with my father. He was already married and had Kate. There was nothing to be decided. He loved Sara with every fiber of his being, there was nothing that would change that, not even a true mate. Luckily, his mate was also married to the love of her life. She was four months pregnant. So, in the end no one got hurt. They both rejected each other so that the mate bond would sever and they both resumed their lives just as happily like nothing happened.”
That story totally changed my whole perspective on mates. I always thought having a mate meant you can’t fall in love with anyone else, not when your mate was out there somewhere waiting to be found.
Losing a mate and finding another love after that was also something I wasn’t sure about.
That reminded of Linda… and Stephanie, where were they? I totally forgot about them amidst everything that happened.
“Did you tell Linda and Stephanie that Daniel was caught?” I asked alpha Klaus.
I saw him clench his jaw as he said, “Yes, I told them they were off duty, especially after they ma*s*sively failed in their task.”
I stopped and stared at him fiercely, “Don’t tell me you blamed and scolded them for this?”
He looked at me frantically as he said, “The hell I did! You were almost K*lled and they were nowhere near you when it happened! What was the point of a*s*signing them if they weren’t going to do their god damn jobs and protect you, when you had to protect yourself?”
I answered him calmly, so I don’t let things escalate between us again “It’s not their fault, alpha. I told Linda she was off duty for that day because I was going to stay with Sara the whole time. Besides, do you really think it would’ve made a difference? I would have ditched them too, just like I did with you. They shouldn’t be blamed for this”
He took a deep breath and said firmly “Let’s just keep walking, I have a meeting after forty-five minutes, I can’t be late for it.”
I had to bite back another response that would not have passed by without causing an argument. I will just have to talk to Linda and Stephanie later and ma*s*sively apologize for getting them blamed wrongfully.
We continued walking in silence after that until we reached their door.
We knocked and waited until Joseph opened the door and let us in.
Before I could open my mouth to apologize to Joseph, he held me in a hug so tight, I could barely breath.
He whispered emotionally, “You have no idea how much you scared me Ella. Don’t ever put yourself in danger like this again, promise me.”
“I promise,” I mumbled.
His affection towards me never fails to touch me to my c0re. I loved him so so much, it hurts.
He cupped my face with both of his hands and I noticed his tearful eyes for the first time.
“I’m glad you’re okay, kiddo. I’m really so damn glad.”
My tears escape and I smile at him as I feel myself unable to speak anymore without sobbing.
He lets me go, and I turn my head to look for Sara.
I find her sitting on the sofa bed in front of the TV. She was looking at me tearfully too. I almost run over to her, and hug her lightly so I don’t hurt her. I sob as I begin to speak, while still holding on to her “I’m so s…”
She cuts me off as she says firmly and tenderly at the same time, “Don’t! I know what you are going to say. Don’t even think about apologizing to me.”
She holds my face with one hand, while her other hand wipes away the stream of tears that were falling.
“Don’t blame yourself Ella please. This is not your fault honey.”
I sniffled and said between sobs “I can’t help it Sara. I feel responsible for what happened. If it wasn’t for me, you would have never been in danger in the first place….. I would have never been able to forgive myself if…” I couldn’t bring myself to finish that sentence.
“Shhh, stop crying. I’m okay I swear. We are both okay. Don’t linger on what could’ve happened.”
I hugged her again and whispered “I was so scared when I heard what happened. I’m so happy you are okay Sara.”
She caressed my back gently as she tried to calm me down.
After that, we all sit on the sofa bed in a circle and fill each other on what happened during the ceremony. Alpha Klaus also told them what happened earlier when we visited Daniel.
Joseph looked at me and said determinedly, “Don’t let him rattle you Ella. He is messing with your head. We will get answers from him eventually.”
I nod my head absently. I had a strong, sinking feeling that he really wasn’t messing with me at all.
“Do you want to tell them or should I?” alpha Klaus looks at me expectantly. Joseph and Sara look at us quizzically.
I take a deep breath and say casually “We decided to get married.”
