Chapter 214

Hawk took a menacing step towards Garry. “You made a big mistake by throwing the bottles of scent on the way, Garry. Maggie tried her best to conceal her scent but unfortunately, she couldn’t. It was easy to track you all down. The scent of your engine oil and that of Lia was strong at the places where she had thrown the perfume bottles, but we followed the highway and the scent faded. It was not difficult to follow Lia’s scent through the forest.” Hawk snarled, his l*ips peeling back. “As for Maggie, we don’t know where she is, but I wished she was here with you. I would have k*illed her myself.”

“Free me!” Lia’s nervous voice came to his ears and his wolf wanted to surface. He could hear the chain clanking and Lia struggling against them. His heart went out for his mate and the agony she must have been through. The chains dropped to the floor. “Arthur!” Lia rasped.

“Come here, baby girl,” Arthur whispered.

From the corner of his eyes he saw Arthur carrying Lia in his arms out of the cottage. He gave a small nod to Hawk and the next moment, Hawk lunged at him. He caught Garry, snapped his arms in two. A blood-curdling scream later, Garry was on the floor, begging for mercy. “I am sorry! I am sorry! Please have mercy!”

“Mercy?” Hawk’s c*hest rumbled with fury. “When was this mercy when you shackled Lia to the bed. You are so pathetic. You kidnapped her when she was only four and you kidnapped her again? Is that what you specialize in? Kidnapping girls who are weaker than you?’’

“You go and take care of Lia, Hawk,” Liam said, swinging the baton in his h*and. “We will take care of this f*ucker.” Hawk wanted to wring Garry’s n*eck for t*ouching Lia and for harming her so much. But he stepped back, “Take care of him nicely,” he said to Liam without looking at him. “If he lives, he should be crippled all his life. If Maggie comes back, take her to the psychiatric institution. She needs help. From what I can gather, he has made her a drug-addict.”

“Sure man!” Liam said. “Now go to Lia. This was a deal we had struck. You wanted me and my team to protect Lia till we can and you brothers will play for us for the next two years. I am here for my part of the deal.”

Hawk placed his h*and on Liam’s shoulder. “And we will play for you and the college.” Liam grinned. “You have it now! Go!”

As Hawk rushed out, he heard boys jumping with a roar and attacking Garry. He didn’t want to think what ten boys could do to him. He didn’t care now. All he cared for was for Lia. He jumped in the car and took Lia in his lap. She curled up against him and Arthur drove them back to home.

At the cottage, Garry lay in a pool of blood, trying his best to breathe. The boys had hit him so much that he was a pulp and he didn’t know if he would live or not, but before dying he wanted to talk to Maggie and tell her that she should take the revenge forward. He lay motionless on the cold floor for a long time, life leaving him one breath at a time. Every bone in his b*ody was fractured. There was tremendous blood loss. His jaw was smashed and yet he held on to the hope to meet Maggie. He hated Lia and he hated her mates. If he ever lived through this, he was going to come back and k*ill Lia at the first opportunity.

It had become very dark and the lights of the house were out. A strange howl was heard in the distance. The beasts had started prowling the forest. He hoped that they didn’t smell his blood because if they did, he would become their food. It was not long when he heard scraping sound on the door. He wanted to call her, but he couldn’t move his l*ips. His one eye was open and the other shut because it was swollen. Somehow, he managed to turn his face to the side. The door of the cottage was ajar.

In the darkness of the night, he saw a snout poking inside. “Maggie…” he moved his t*ongue. The door opened further and a scraggy brown wolf entered. Slowly, it padded towards him. “Maggie…” he whispered with every ounce of energy left in him. The wolf came near him, sniffed him, wheezed and sniffed him again. It took a step back and peeled its l*ips, baring its fangs in a snarl. He sensed that something was wrong. Was this wolf Maggie? She had told him that she had a brown wolf. He moved his f*ingers as if to call her, but the wolf snarled even more. He thought that a werewolf had his or her wolf and human form in control of each other, then why wasn’t Maggie responding? Why wasn’t she shifting?

His breath was faint and he knew that he didn’t have enough time to live. He said, “Maggie, I want you to-’’ The wolf growled, “-take revenge-’’ And the wolf attacked him on his t*hroat. It caught his t*hroat in its jaws and snapped it. Garry’s windpipe punctured and he died instantly. The wolf took a step back. It sat on its haunches, tipped its head up and let out a loud howl. Then it got up and after giving him one last look, padded out of the cottage.

This was Maggie’s wolf. After Maggie had shifted for the first time in long, her wolf was extremely angry with her. She took over completely and didn’t allow Maggie to shift back. She wasn’t even going to allow her to shift in future. Basically, Maggie had gone rogue and she would never shift back to her human form. Her wolf loved nature. After all the drug abuse, she had become thinner and sickly. Maggie was forever trapped in her wolf form. Maggie’s wolf looked back at the cottage, scratched its ear with her right paw and then took to the jungles, never to return back.

“Lia,” Hawk said when they reached their home. She had wept and wept and when she could no more, she had slept in his arms. “We are home, baby.”

She opened her eyes with a jerk as if waking up from a bad dream.

“It’s fine. It’s fine,” Hawk assured her and hugged her. “You are safe now.”

Arthur came to the other side and he took her from Hawk. Together, they went inside their home. Arthur took her directly to the bedroom. He sat her on the bed and knelt in front of her as Hawk sat beside her. “How are you?” Arthur asked, searching her eyes.

“Is he—” Lia asked, blinking through a fresh bout of tears. “Where is he?” Her voice was hoarse and full of pain. “He must be dead,” Arthur hissed. “Or about to die.”

Lia closed her eyes. She should have felt sad but she felt… liberated. “Is there a way to confirm that he is dead?”

“Yes, I already asked my warriors to check on him. I am waiting for their message.”

Lia shook her head. “Should we go back to the Dark Moon pack? I am fed up with these problems. Why is it that everyone wants to separate us?”

Arthur cupped her cheeks and wiped her tears with his thumb. “You can’t give up in the middle, baby girl. These problems are a way of life. You deal with them and move forward.”

She took a deep breath in. “It keeps happening because of me. Last time Hawk was in huge trouble because of me and this time-” she bit her bottom l*ip as a sob worked its way out of her. “I don’t like it at all.”

“I assure you that this won’t happen again,” Arthur said. His phone rang and he picked it up. “Yes?” His brows furrowed. “Okay…” His eyes went wide. “Really?” After a bit more conversation, he disconnected. He looked at Lia and smiled. “My warriors called. Garry is dead. It seems that Maggie’s wolf k*illed him in revenge for making her scarry and sickly. My warriors met her wolf in the wild and they saw how glazed her eyes were. They are saying that she would never shift back and now she’s a rogue.”

“Gods!” Lia’s shock was over the top. “That happens?”

Hawk chuckled. He curled his arms around her waist. “Yes, that happens. Wolves go crazy and refuse to shift back. My guess is that in Maggie’s case, she abused her wolf a lot and so her wolf won’t shift back. She is solo and a rogue.”

Lia sighed and leaned on his arms. For a long time, she didn’t speak a word. At last, she said, “I think we can continue staying here.”

A laugh rumbled from her mates. “Come, let’s take a bath,” Arthur said. “You smell like that bastard.”

Two years later.

“Lia!” Arthur called her. “You look lovely in whatever you wear. Please come down. We are getting late for the graduation ceremony!”

“Commminnnggg!” she shouted from her room.

Hunter, River, Shawn and Lena had come. They all laughed as Hawk gave them glasses of wine. “She’s going to take another fifteen minutes,” he sighed.

Hawk and Lia had topped the class, sharing the same points. Arthur had topped his class. Over the last two years, no untoward incident happened. Garry and Maggie faded from their memories.

“I am so proud of you!” River said, hugging her sons. “And I am so glad that Lia got you both here for the college degrees.”

“Well, she’s my daughter!” Shawn had to pitch in his genes card.

River rolled her eyes. “So what? She did everything on her own.”

“That is incorrect,” Shawn argued. “Genes play a lot of roles in intelligence.”

“Goddess! Men!” River rasped. And all the men laughed.

The door of the room opened and Lia walked out. Arthur and Hawk forgot to breathe when they saw their beautiful mate. Wearing a powder blue dress that matched her eyes, she had left her hair open. “You look beautiful!” Arthur said as he k*issed her. He offered his arm to her. “Are we ready?”

“More than ever!” she chirped. She grabbed Hawk’s arms and twined her other arm in his. The parents walked to the cars behind their children with pride swelling in their c*hests.
