Chapter 98

THE MAGES got alerted when they saw my wolf. Before they could conjure a spell, I opened my m*outh and burned them. Their screams echoed in the room as I struggled to escape from the cage.

I had already known that the cage was far from ordinary. My spells were not working on it. I tried destroying it using my b*ody. My wolf smashed against it over and over. I had been struck by the giant thorns. It was like they had lives of their own. They were entering my skin, cutting me deeper each second, while s*ucking my energy.

My fur had been covered by my own blood. I could hear my wolf whimpering but I could not give up. I mustn’t.

Everyone was outside fighting and doing their best for me. I had to fight and do my best for myself as well. With every drop of my blood being splashed onto the roses, they grew bigger.

‘Love, can you hear me now? I can feel your fear. Don’t be afraid. I’m coming over for you. Hang in there.’

Trevor’s voice had given me courage.

My wolf let out another growl as I tried hitting the cage with my b*ody one more time. Hope bloomed in my c*hest when I saw the metals finally wavering.

I did it a few more times until the cage got destroyed at last. By the time I came out, my wolf could barely run out of the door. My senses had gotten so weak that I could no longer smell Zephyr’s scent. I tried linking with him.

‘Zeph, where are you? I’ve broken down the cage. Tell me how I can find you.’

‘No, princess. I saw the spell they were weaving outside. It’s pure evil. You need to get out of this place soon. Just leave me here. I can’t shift anymore. I can’t use any of my powers either.’

‘No. I will leave with you. Tell me where you are, Zeph.’

‘I don’t want to be an extra baggage that you need to take care of. You have gotten weak as well, princess. If you are truly concerned for me, then I’m begging you, save yourself while you still can!’

I didn’t get to reply when Zephyr cut the link between us.

I g*roaned in frustration as I circled around the castle. It seemed like Trent or Cameron was not expecting that I would be able to escape. He did not leave additional guards inside. Instead, he gathered them out which just meant that he was desperate, too.

We had eliminated more than half of his subordinates back in the shifter’s realm after all. His troop was not like before anymore.

I forced my wolf to run. I went to every room until I finally found him. He was in the basement.

Zephyr was back in his human form. He was bruised all over. He could h*ardly open his right eye now. He was stunned upon seeing me.

“I told you to leave,” he whispered.

“Yes, you did but if you think I would do that, then you don’t know me yet. I don’t leave my friends behind. Hop on, Zeph. We came here together. We will escape here together. And just to warn you, I will not leave until you hop on,” I added quickly through the link when I saw his reaction. “With every second you hesitate, you put us both in danger. Now if we die, Trevor will hunt you down and kill you all over again.”

Despite the blood in his m*outh, he grinned. “You are so stubborn, princess.”

I lowered myself even if every single bone in my b*ody was now screaming for rest. Never had I felt this exhausted before.

Zephyr crawled until he was able to hop on.

“Hold t*ight,” I reminded him as I forced my wolf one last time to get through this.

But after a while, I had to stop for a moment to breathe. My limbs were shaking. I could still feel the pain from the mana which Trent had used for the cage.

“Put me down,” Zephyr whispered. His voice cracked as if my pain was making him emotional. “You are bleeding, princess. You are tired. Don’t do this to yourself. I told you to leave me already-”

“Say that one more time and I will really hate you.”

“I just don’t want you sacrificing your life for me.”

“If I were in your shoes right now and you were in mine, would you leave me?”

“No,” he replied in a heartbeat.

My wolf hummed. “See? That, Zephyr, is the true meaning of friendship. I can still do this. You just need to trust me some more. I’m only taking a minute to breathe. And I am not bleeding. You are. Don’t mistake your blood for mine, Zeph.”

When I felt that he was about to move, I ran once more and tried on every door only to be disappointed again and again. I could hear Zephyr cursing for the first time with every wrong door that we found.

“Princess-”

“Don’t talk. Save your breath. I’m not letting you down.”

I continued and was just barely walking when I finally saw a light coming from an open door.

It could be a trap but I really wish it was not.

My c*hest pounded when the closer we get to the door, the closer I finally hear them. The roars. The gunfire. The explosion.

We finally went out and I almost cried to see that it was the right door. The first person who noticed us was Zane.

“Your highness!”

He ran to me and quickly took his brother off me. In the middle of the chaos, of the destruction happening in front of me, I searched for him.

Trevor was in his wolf form, tearing everyone who tried to stop him. When he finally saw me, I caught how relief flooded his eyes but that emotion had easily morphed into anger when he saw my injuries. He growled and started burning the mages with his crimson fire, which was the same as mine.

I allowed myself to shift in my human form and winced when I saw the cuts all over my b*ody. Mariz was immediately by the side while the other wolves covered her. She removed her jacket and helped me wear it.

She was in the middle of zipping it on me when I saw Trent who was only a few steps away from Trevor. He was summoning a dark fire in his h*ands and he was pointing it in my mate’s direction.

No one else had noticed because everyone was busy fighting including him.

I gripped the jacket.

Before I knew it, my feet were already moving on their own. My injuries grew worse with my every step but all I could think of was to be there for him the way he had been there for me.

I could not lose him. I don’t think I could live in a world without him in it.

“Trevor!” I screamed and when he turned to my direction, I pushed him away just when Trent released the massive dark fire.

I was not able to move along with him, though.

I lost my balance.

And then I felt it. The second the ball of fire hit my stomach. The second I fell on the ground and everything seemed to have stopped for me. I heard their screams; they were desperately calling my name.

“Priscilla!”

“Your Highness!”

“Love!” Trevor shifted. He was shaking when he held me in his arms. “What the hell did you do?”

I smiled through the tears, through the blood. He was alive. Thank God. It was worth it. I was not late.

“I did it. I saved you this time, love. I finally got to do something for you, too.”

While watching everything unfold before me, I remembered my dad’s warning. I remembered the prediction.

Blood and death.

Tears started sliding down Trevor’s cheeks. “You didn’t have to do that!”

My h*ands were trembling as I reached out to t*ouch his face. “But isn’t that what love is? It s protecting each other.” There were many things that I still wanted to say but my m*outh was too dry and too tired to keep moving. All I managed to say next was, “It has been an honor loving you, Trevor.”

(Trevor)

MY WHOLE world had stopped turning the second I saw Priscilla close her eyes. I no longer heard her heartbeat. Everyone was panicking and screaming but I could not do it.

My mate cannot die.

She had to live.

She was the sole reason that I was alive.

She cannot leave me like this. I haven’t even told her that I love her properly. I should not have hesitated. Those were just three f*ucking words. What was wrong with me? Why didn’t I say it?

I didn’t want our moment in her office to be the last memory she would remember about us. She had to open her eyes. She had to hear me say it.

I bit my wrist and tried to open her m*outh. I fed her my blood. But nothing was happening. Her face was still white. She was not moving. Her injuries were not healing. Her heartbeat… I could still not hear it.

“Why? It has to work!” My voice broke as tears started to blur my vision. “Wake up, Priscilla! Don’t do this to me! Don’t f*ucking do this to us. Open your eyes because if you don’t, I swear I will burn your beloved world into the ground!”

But this time, my threats did not work on her.

I fed her more blood and shook her b*ody.

“Priscilla! Damn it!”

“Princess…” Jeremy dropped down on the ground. His face was pale as he reached out and held his daughter in his arms.

For the first time, the soldiers saw the king weep.

The war was over. Trent had been caught. The noise from earlier was now gone. Instead, the screams were replaced by sobs. The men all kneeled on the ground, gave their h*and salute to their princess, as they lowered their heads.

“Why the hell are you all crying? Get a grip on yourselves!” I growled. “My queen is not dead! She will wake up, you’ll see.” I crawled to Jeremy’s side and held Priscilla’s cold h*ands. I k*issed them desperately. “Come on, love. Show them. Show all of us a miracle. I’m begging you.”

Minutes had passed by until they turned to hours. And no miracle was happening.

My wolf was starting to become wild; it was clawing inside me, wanting to get out until I finally snapped.

I shifted back in my wolf form and started burning every damn thing that I saw.
